Clearing operations continued; large stocks ammo found - Wanni

Sri Lankan troops engaged in clearing operations in the former LTTE hideouts in Wanni continue to uncover stocks of arms and ammunition.

According to the defence sources, 20 hand grenades, five claymore mines, 11 anti personnel mines (AP), four electrical detonators, four rocket propeller grenades, and 750 (T-56) ammo were found during the searches conducted yesterday (Jul 25) by Army 61 Division, 57 Division, and Task Forces 2, 3 and 5 in the Vavuniya, Mullaittivu and Kilinochchi areas.

Meanwhile, Army Task Force 8 troops found the largest cache of arms and ammo for the day in the searches conducted in Puthukudduiruppu East.

Among the items found were 19 T-56 rifles, one FMC rifle, 22 RPG rounds, nine AP mines, 33 hand grenades, three radio communication sets, nine boat engines, 11500 detonators, 80 fuses, ammo (12.7) 1000, ammo (T-56) 10200, ammo (MPMG) 1600, ammo (5.56) 3600, ammo (14.5) 1275, ammo (.45) 295, 83 IEDs, 12 Arul bombs, and 9 boat engines. Search operations are being continued.
