LTTE links: Canada detains Tamil migrant of MV Sun Sea [Sep 09 2010]

The Canada Border Service Agency suspects that one of the Tamil migrants from the MV Sun Sea in Canada is a LTTEer who was raising funds for the outfit, Globe and Mail reported.

At the detention review hearing held at the Fraser Regional Correctional Centre in Maple Ridge, the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board has ordered to detain him for 30-days  until the next hearing.

According to Jennifer Friburg, the Legal counsel from Canada Border Service Agency, the Tamil migrant was among the group sent to 12 European countries to raise funds for tsunami relief from the Tamil diaspora.

“In his initial identity interview, he denied being a member of the LTTE or travelling as a part of any delegation and initially denied traveling to any country outside of Sri Lanka,” the newspaper quoted Friburg.

Over 492 Tamil illegal migrants are detained in Canada and he was among the first of the group to receive his third round of detention review hearings since the vessel arrived on Aug 13.
