UNP breaks into three? [September 13 2010]

The United National Party (UNP) is set to break in to three fractions if a team of around 25 MPs, headed by Kurunegala District MP Jayasiri Jayasekera, decides to function as an independent group when the Parliament meets on September 21.

Jayasekera has claimed that there are more NPs to join his group but a moderate UNP MP demanding for a change in the party leadership said there is another group of eight UNP MPs who do not want to join Dayasiri Jayasekera’s group.

“True that we are against Ranil but that does not mean we are going to support Dayasiri. If Dayasiri forms an independent group, we too would have a similar group with our own ideas. Then there will be three fractions in the UNP – Ranil’s team, Dayasiri’s independent group and us. It is a sad situation,” he told Observer Online.
