Container blast in Batti kills over 60 cops

The death toll in the container blast at the Karadiyanaru, Batticaloa has risen to 62 with 60 policemen and two Chinese nationals, Military spokesman Major General Ubhaya Medawala said.

The Spokesman said three containers, loaded with explosives to be used for the Eastern development work, were kept at the Karadiyanaru Police station for safety. The containers belonged to a Chinese company which had undertaken development work in the East.

The two Chinese officials unloaded the explosives according to their requirement. One container had exploded while the explosives were being shifted and the rest exploded subsequently. The explosives were to be used to blast a rock for the construction work.

The injured have been admitted to the Batticaloa hospital.
