India and Pakistan support Sri Lanka’s Nuclear Energy [September 28 2010]

India and Pakistan have pledged to support Sri Lanka’s quest to introduce nuclear energy to the country.

Minister of Power and Energy Champika Ranawajka said that he met senor officials of India and Pakistan at the recently concluded 54th World Nuclear Congress in Vienna and had extensive talks on this subject.

Minister said that the Ministry is very keen to look at alternative energy sources and introduction of Nuclear Energy is a priority as surveys show that nuclear deposits would be sufficient for the next 100 years.

“This energy source would be very important especially for health, Power generation, Agriculture and industrial sectors and we would be conducting feasibility studies with foreign assistance soon, ,” he said.

The India government has also pledged to provide a Cobolt- 60 machine to be used at the Cancer hospital in Maharagama and a MoU in this regard was also singed.
