Rs. 80 million for flood relief [October 05 2010]          

The government has allocated over Rs. 80 million for flood relief, the Minister of Disaster Management A.H.M. Fowzie said.  

Over 2,050 people in 595 families have been affected by the rains in Gampaha, Galle, Nuwara Eliya and Matale districts.  

Eight people died due to lightning and collapsing of houses. Thirty four houses have been damaged and 84 houses damaged partly.  

Minister Fowzie said Rs. One million had been released to provide flood relief in the Galle district. Each family was given food and dry rations for a week and compensation for the damage suffered.  

“ The Treasury  has agreed to release more money if there is an urgent requirement for flood relief”, he said.
