Commonwealth Games:

Weightlifter Vidanage bags a silver medal

Weightlifter Chinthana Vidanage won Sri Lanka's first silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi today. Competing in men' s weightlifting 69kg category at the Jawaharlal Nehru Weightlifting complex, Vidanage lifted 134kg in the clean and jerk lift in his second attempt.

He narrowly missed the gold medal when he was unsuccessful with his attempt to lift 137kg. His clean and jerk total accounted for a new Sri Lanka record of 308kg. Indian Ravi Kumar won the gold with a lift of 175kg to make his total 321Kg.

"I came here hoping for the Gold medal. But the Indian lifter was better than me. He and the Malaysian were very tough contenders and I am happy with the silver I got," Vidanage said after his triumph.
