Sri Lankan sprinters excel in New Delhi Games [October 06 2010]

Sri Lankan sprinters did a good job at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium last night, qualifying for the semi-finals of their respective events. Sprinter Shehan Ambepitiya did exceptionally well on his behalf, recording his personal best of 10.31 seconds in the second round of the men's 100m event finishing the race as the fourth.

Ambepitiya was placed second in the first round, clocking 10.48 seconds. Shehan and the Jamaican Oshane Andre Bailey were right in front after the first twenty five meters. Andre finished with a time of 10.36 and both got through to the second round. In the second round, he was head to head with the Jamaican and from Trinidad and Tobago.

"It was a great experience to compete with some of the fastest athletes. In the first round, I had a easy run but the second was not so easy. I am hoping for a better show on Thursday," said Ambepitiya.

Chandrika Subhashini also qualified for the semi-finals of the women's 400m event when she clocked he seasonal best of 53.01 seconds and finished third in the fourth heat. She will run in the semi-finals scheduled for this evening.
