IDPs in welfare centres reduced to 23,352 [October 07 2010]  

With the rapid resettlement drive, the number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in welfare centres in Vavuniya and Jaffna has reduced to 23,352, Deputy Minister of Resettlement Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan said.

The IDPs in five zones - Anandakumaraswami Kadirakamar, Ramanadan, Arunachalam and Zone 4 in the welfare center in Vavuniya has reduced to 22,194 and it includes 8,185 people, who are staying with their relatives.

The number of IDPs in welfare centres in Jaffna has reduced to 1,158. “ resettling of IDPs in Mullaithivu is on,. But this area need to be carefully de-mined as the LTTE had its last battle there. They have buried lots of mines to provent the military coming in”,  Muralitharan said.

According to the Deputy Minister, over 230,000 IDPs have been resettled in their original villages Content.
