UNP focus on LG elections [October 10 2010]

United National Party (UNP), despite its internal power struggle with reformists challenge the leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe, plans to hold interviews at district level to pick the partys candidates at the local government elections early next year. The UNP will hold the interviews on October 16 and 17 to select the prospective candidates who will contest under the elephant symbol.

UNP Chairman and Kurunegala District MP Gamini Jayawickrama Perera has said that the party has received a large number of applications from members who wished to contest for the local government elections. He added that the main emphasis in picking candidates will be their loyalty to the party.
