Rs. 1,000 million projects to boost dairy industry [October 22 2010]

The Ministry of Livestock and Rural Community Development has implemented three new projects in order to expand the local dairy industry. The estimated cost for the three projects would be around Rs. 1,000 million. Establishing dairy villages, livestock breeder farms and facilitating and promoting liquid milk consumption will be the three projects the Ministry intends to implement.  These initiatives will also include cattle salvage programs.

Under the new project the ministry plans to establish dairy villages at a cost of Rs. 600 million. According to the plan 20 farmers should be living in one village. Already 718 dairy villages are established island-wide. Under the livestock breeder farm program 245 cattle and goat breeding units and 717 small scale breeding units are established benefiting 962 farmers. The ministry has allocated approximately Rs. 150 million for the livestock breeder farm program
