Only one percent of uni. students create unrest [October 26 2010]

The Higher Education Ministry said it would not hesitate to take legal action against one percent of the students, who create unrest, in universities.

Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne referring to the present unrest in universities as psychological terrorism' said the culprits, who found guilty for creating unrest among university students to achieve their petty political gains, would be put behind bars following the existing law of the country.

" Except few incidents, the overal university environment is under control. Over 99 percent of the undergraduates protest against these politically motivated agitations. They want to continue with their studies but the first year students, who are new to the university environment, are vulnerable to these acts. The politically motivated students unions take this opportunity to gain their targets", he said.

He said the Ministry was not bothered to take tough actions under the prevailing laws to punish these students. " There is a myth among these protestors that university students can not be punished", he said.
