‘No civilian with white flags was shot at’ – former GA Mullaithivu [November 5 2010]

The former Government Agent of Mullaithivu Emelda Sukumar said no civilian carrying ‘white flags’ were killed by the military while they were fleeing the LTTE dominated areas.

Sukumar, the present Jaffna GA, testifying before the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission yesterday said she had met hundreds of civilians who had escaped the LTTE and moved to the government controlled areas carrying white flags.

“ They were in Vavuniya and told me how they had escaped and surrendered to the soldiers while carrying white flags. They were not shot by the soldiers. But the LTTE had shot civilians who tried to flee”, she said.

Sukumar was the Mullaithivu GA from 2002 to January 2009.
