‘Yal Uthpaththi’ to market for Palmyrah farmers [November 5 2010]

Yal Uthpaththi a project aiming to create markets for farmers in the north was launched by Central Bank together with Cargills (Ceylon) Plc and the Bank of Ceylon.

The program will find markets for Farmers from Jaffna who specialize in Palmyrah based products. BOC has disbursed Rs 105 mln among 3000 micro entrepreneurs, farmers and fisherman to start income generating projects in the peninsular. The funds are given to 19 financial institutions under the Central Banks Poverty Alleviation Micro finance project Prabodini.

Cargills (Ceylon) PLC will have a special corner at 20 selected outlets to display and sell all the palmyrah products which include mun ata kavum, palmyrah juggary products as well as, baskets weaved from palmyrah leaves.

A cargills spokesman said that Caragilsl is among the first corporates to enter the East and in the peaceful environment we have aaccelerate dteh pace of our investmenstin the North. The company has trained 1000 farmers from Jaffna and have commenced direct purchasing.
