Manju to face two-year ban? [November 14 2010]

Sri Lanka boxer Manju Wanniarachchi is likely to face a two-year ban after his ‘B’ urine sample, taken during last month’s Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, too tested positive for banned anabolic steroids.

Wannaiarachchi, who won men’s 56kg boxing gold – Sri Lanka’s first in 72 years, was tested positive for Nandralone. Following the positive ‘A’ sample test, the boxer requested that he ‘B’ sample too to be tested. With the ‘B’ sample too showing the identical result, he is likely to be stripped off the medal and undergo a two-year ban.

However, 30-year-old boxer could go for an arbitration process if he wishes to change the decision of the anti-doping authorities. Wanniarachchi’s lawyer Kalinga Indratissa, in a statement, has said that they will challenge the result as the urine test had allegedly not been carried out according to proper ‘chain of custody’.
