Magampura Port opened [November 18 2010]

President Mahinda Rajapaksa commissioned the Mahinda Rajapaksa Magampura International Port a short while ago. The first vessel to arrive was the Jetliner and a number of other vessels also arrived to mark the opening.

The Port is expected to attract a large number of ships which now bypass Sri Lanka on the Asia-Australia route. The Port will have all modern facilities when completed and will act in conjunction with the proposed Mattala International Airport as a transport and transshipment hub.

It is the first and largest inland Port in the region and will complement Colombo, Oluvil and other ports in the country. The Magampura Port is one of the many mega projects initiated by President Rajapaksa during the first five years of his tenure. The President is due to take oaths for his second term on November 19.
