A case has filled against the Western provincial authorities against their inability to take measures to prevent floods by removing obstructions in waterways.

The Centre for Environment Justic (EJC) has filed a writ application in the Western Provincial High Court making Omar Kamil, Chief Executive Officer of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), Udaya Gammanpila and Minister of Environment Western Province, Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Disaster Management as respondents.

The Urban Development Authority, Land Reclamation and Development Cooperation, Central Enviornmental Authority and the AG have also cited as respondents for their failure to safeguard the environment and people from adverse impacts and protect them from natural disasters and hazards due to accumulation of rain water in the Western province.

The CEJ has stated in their petition that people have been continuously suffering for a number of years due to rain water and respondents have failed to take suitable action to remove all the obstructions in waterways and enable rainwater to flow into the sea.
