Former President D.B. Wijetunga passed away at the Intensive Care Unit of the Kandy General Hospital today. He is the third Executive President of Sri Lanka after the late J.R. Jayewardene and R. Premadasa and was 86 years.
Born on February 15, 1922, Wijetunga became the President of Sri Lanka in an unexpected moment when the LTTE terrorists killed then President R. Premadasa on May 1, 1993 and was the First Citizen until November, 1994. Prior to the top most assignment, he was the Prime Minister from March, 1989 to May, 1993.
