Weligama calm after morning clashes [September 22 2008]

Weligama remained calm as Police said they have brought the situation under control after this morning's clashes between two groups which damaged at least seven buildings including a mosque. Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said a gas station, few shops and some houses were damaged due to the clash but the Police has now restored law and order in the area.

According to the sources clashes erupted between the Sinhala and Muslim businessmen of the Weligama area. Additional Police troops have been deployed to the area. Weligama police have arrested one person.
