Ontario undergraduate ordered extradited on charges of supporting [October 20 2008]

A University of Waterloo student has been ordered extradited to the United States on charges he supported the LTTE terrorists. Ramanan Mylvaganam (31) of Malton, Ontario, is now in custody and has 30 days to appeal or officially surrender to U.S. authorities. Four suspects with ties to the university and the Tamil Students Association were among 12 men charged in 2006.

The arrests followed a joint investigation by the FBI and the RCMP into an alleged plot to buy weapons, launder money through front charities and smuggle equipment to the Tigers, which has been declared a terrorist organisation by the US and Canada since 1997 and 2006 respectively.Mylvaganam was a computer engineering student at the time of his arrest.

After his release on bail, he returned to the university to work on a master's degree. The recent extradition order by a Federal Court judge came after a hearing in a Brampton, Ont., court last month. Suresh Sriskandarajah, 28, of Waterloo, Ont., the alleged leader of the group of suspects, is scheduled for an extradition hearing in Toronto in early 2009.
