Police claimed the current election campaign in the North to be peaceful with no polls related violence being reported from the peninsula. Inspector General of Police, Jayantha Wickremeratne has given strict directives to the police in Jaffna to move swiftly to arrest any type of violence during the current campaign.

Following the crushing of the LTTE, the atmosphere in the Jaffna peninsula has remained calm and now it is even more calm, claimed a senior police officer.

Deputy Inspector General of the Northern sector, Nimal Lewke said the police were alert and vigilant to curb acts of violence or intimidation during the election campaign.

He claimed that a peaceful atmosphere existed because the law enforcement authorities regularly had meetings with the leaders of political parties contesting the poll to ensure a free and fair election
