Ariyawathi’s inquiry report soon [September 9 2010] By Ananda Kannangara  

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) said the report of the inquiry into L.G. Ariyawathi, who arrived the country after being tortured by her Saudi Arabian employer, will be submitted to the relevant government officials, shortly.

Ariyawathi, after her return to the country, was hospitalized and had 19 nails removed from her body. The doctors found a total 23 nails and needles embedded her body.

SLBFE, Chairman Kingsly Ranawaka told the Sunday Observer online that the Authority has already discuss the matter the Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry and Saudi  authorities.

The SLBFE Deputy General Manager Mangala Randeniya said although Ariyawathi’s body was thoroughly checked by both airport officials in Riyadh and Katunayake using metal detectors, they were unable to detect the nails which were inside her body.

He said even the Bureau officials who were on duty at the Airport noticed her movement s and inquired about it. She refused to make any comment as her only intention was to leave the airport as early as possible.

However, she obtained Rs. 750 as a travel expenses, which is given by the SLBFE’s Airport Branch for Sri Lankan migrant workers coming from abroad.

Meanwhile, the Housing Authority last week has commenced the construction work of Ariyawathis house at her hometown in Thihagoda, Matara with the financial assistance provided by the SLBFE.
