Attempts to commit suicide still high

Though Sri Lanka's suicide rate has dropped notably, attempts to committing suicide are on the increase, Sri Lanka Sumithrayo (SLS), a leading counseling organization said.

According to the SLS, out of 100,000 Sri Lankans an average of 21 people attempt to commit suicide while 12 end their lives every day.

SLS Director of the Colombo Branch Kumudhini de Silva said the country's suicide rate, which topped the world in 1995 with 43 people committing suicide daily, has come down to half now.

She said the majority of the victims were youth and it was difficult to cite a particular reason for the tragedy. " It could be many reason which accumulated in ones mind that resulted in ending his or her life. People are stressed", she said.

In 2008 4,120 people have committed suicide and 3,260 of them were males.

The government has imposed restrictions on importing poisonous pesticide but still the major mode of committing suicide was pesticide.

" The SLS is doing awareness and counseling programs in 80 villagers and the majority of victims died due to pesticide poisoning", she said.
