President Rajapaksa, seventh speaker at UNGA opening session  [September 18 2010]  

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will address the 65th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as the seventh speaker at the UNGA opening session on September 23 in New York.  

He will address the session at 11 am.  

Out of 192 UN member states over 140 Heads of State are to attend the three-day Assembly and President Rajapaksa is scheduled to address the high level plenary meeting on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as the fifth speaker next Wednesday.  

The Director General Public Communications Bandula Jayasekara said President Rajapaksa’s speech would draw a greater interest since he was participating the session one year after the annihilation of the LTTE terrorism.  

President Rajapaksa has been invited for the breakfast hosted by former US President Bill Clinton on Tuesday.  

He will also attend a luncheon hosted by the UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon on the inaugural day on Sept 23 and a dinner reception by the US President Barrack Obama for all the Heads of State.  

External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L Peiris, Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva, W.D.J.Seneviratne, Douglas Devananda, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga are among the delegation.  

He will also visit the New York Buddhist Vihara and meet the Lankan community there.
