Nearly 600 Tamil proficient policemen for North

The Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya said that 593 police personnel who have been trained in Tamil language would be posted in police stations in the North and East and in the Upcountry.

He said that the police personnel trained in Tamil could be able to write, speak and take down complaints in Tamil.

The IGP also added the police department has worked out a plan to teach Tamil for 1200 police personnel every year to reach a target of six thousand police personnel who could function in Tamil in the next five years. According to the IGP the police personnel with the fluency in Tamil will be posted initially to the stations in the areas where the IDPS are being resettled.
