No Lankan Needs To Flee The Country [September 28 2010]

No Lankan needs to flee Government says that no Lankan needs to flee the country under the existing peaceful situation after ending the 30-year war against the LTTE terrorism.

Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris informed the Canadian Minister Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon when he met him in New York, last week, Foreign Ministry said.

“The UNHCR has also recognized this position in a recent statement”, he said.

Minister Peiris referring to the recent incidents on human smuggling from Sri Lanka to Canada said after defeating LTTE terrorism, some pro-LTTE elements have shifted their base of operations overseas, including to Canada.

Seeking support of the Canadian government in taking effective action against LTTE elements in Canada, he said the activities detrimental to the security and sovereignty of Sri Lanka will not take place on Canada.

The Minister Cannon briefed Minister Peiris on the action taken by Canada in cracking down fund-raising by LTTE and its front organizations based in Canada.
