Fonseka to get the prisoner number [October 01 2010]

MP Sarath Fonseka, who was transferred to Welikada Prison last night for a 30 month term of rigorous imprisonment, will get his prison number shortly, the Prison’s Commissioner General Maj. Gen. V.R Silva said.

He told the Sunday Observer online that all the prisoners, including Fonseka, convicted yesterday would be registered and the registering process is in progress.

Maj. Gen. Silva said he had not received instructions to provide special security for Fonseka from the relavent authorities and he would be treated as a normal prisoner.

“ But as he was the former Army Commander and there are other prisoners from different ethnic groups, I have to look into his security”, he said.

He has been housed in the ‘M’ ward.

Fonseka was convicted for the jail term by the second Court Martial and was ratified by the President.
