England crush Sri Lanka 59-7 in C-wealth Games rugby [October 11 2010]

England thrashed Sri Lanka by 59 points to 7 in their opening Group ‘D’ match of the Commonwealth Games seven-a-side rugby championship begun in New Delhi today. England collected their points from seven goals and two tries.

It was one of the heaviest defeats for Sri Lanka in seven-a-side rugby as England scored as many as nine tries, of which seven were converted. The winners led 33-0 at half time, running down as many as five tries before lemons. Four of the tries were converted. England added another 26 points in the second half through three goals and a try.

Sri Lanka’s solitary try, which was registered in the tenth minute of the second half, was scored by Sooriyabandara while Radika Hettiarachchi added extra points.

Sri Lanka is due to play Australia in another league round match scheduled for later this afternoon.
