Over 124 new HIV-positive cases have been diagnosed since September 2009 to September this year. Four died of AIDS in the third quarter of 2010.
The total number of HIV/AIDS cases reported in 2009 September was 1,016 and it rose upto 1,285 in September 2010.
Dr. Shantha Hettiarachchi, Communication Co-ordinator of the Health Education Bureau said 216 people died of AIDS since 1986. “ The reported number of AIDS cases is 332 and mother –to-child cases are 46. Two children have been infected with HIV/AIDS in the third quarter of this year”, he said.
According to Dr. Hettiarachchi, only 10 children who are infected with HIV/AIDS are living and they are given antiviral theraphhy by the Ministry of Health to prolong their lives..
The estimated number of HIV positive cases is 3,000.
The total number of HIV positive cases reported during the third quarter of this year is 36.
