Low quality mobile phones in market [October 22 2010]

Over 30 percent of the mobile phones sold in the market are substandard and cause health effects to users, the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) warns.

The TRC Director General Anusha Palpita said the TRC had taken a decision to remove low quality mobile phones from the market.

He said according to the new system all mobile phones would be registered at the TRC and will be given an IMI number.

“ This number is useful as when buying a new phone, the IMI number of the phone can be checked from the TRC via a SMS to verify the quality of the phone”, he said.
