Low quality mobile phones in market

<p>Over 30 percent of the mobile phones sold in the market are
substandard and cause health effects to users, the Telecommunication
Regulatory Commission (TRC) warns.

<p>The TRC Director General Anusha Palpita said the TRC had taken a
decision to remove low quality mobile phones from the market.

<p>He said according to the new system all mobile phones would be
registered at the TRC and will be given an IMI number.

<p>“ This number is useful as when buying a new phone, the IMI number of
the phone can be checked from the TRC via a SMS to verify the quality
of the phone”, he said.
