Lanka proposes to eliminate fireworks from ceremonies [October 26 2010]

ACAPULCO, Mexico -- The IOC will study a proposal to eliminate fireworks from the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics for environmental reasons.

Sri Lanka's national Olympic committee made the proposal Sunday. It wants to reduce harmful emissions and said laser shows could replace fireworks.

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge says the Olympic body will consider the proposal "in a very serious way" and raise the matter with its environment commission and organizers of the games. He asked the Sri Lankans for more information on the carbon footprint of fireworks.

London Olympic organizers said they haven't yet discussed fireworks for the 2012 ceremonies. (AP)
