NMCR informs Defence Secretary on illegal drugs in schools [October 26 2010]

The National Monitoring Committee on Child Rights (NMCR) has informed the Secretary Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa about sale of illegal drugs around the schools islandwide.

Secretary of the NMCR and the Commissioner of Department of Child care and Probation Sarath Abeygunawardena said there was a rising demand for illegal drugs like babul and some ayruvedic medicine ( madana modaka) among school children as the children had plenty of opportunities to buy them from the school surroundings.

“ We appreciate the investigations and raids done by the Police under the directions of the Secretary Defence to take stocks of babul into custody”, he said.

He said the NMCR had received several complaints from popular schools as well as schools in surburbs that the sale of such illegal drugs business was thriving. “ We alerted the responsible authorities”, he said.
