Over 7,000 in custody for narcotic offences [October 27 2010]

In an attempt to eliminate drug mafia in the country, the Police have arrested over 7,089 people in connection with drug offences and taken over eight tonnes of illegal drugs within a period of two weeks.

The raids were carried out by the special narcotic units set up in all police stations from 13 to 25 October under the directives of the IGP Mahinda Balasuroya.

The police have seized 6,000 kg of ganja, 1,332 bottels of Madana Modakaya, 41 kg of babul and two kg of heroin during the raids.
