Mahaweli farmers grows 'priced' mango [October 29 2010]

For the firs time Mahaweli farmers have introduced Sri Lanka’s highest prized mangoes tot eh local market.

Branded as Tom EJC, (Mangifera indicath) is mango is to be prized at around Rs. 700 to the local market and at around Rs. 900 to both UK and European markets.

The fruit grown in tropical countries and recommended the to dry zone is a large fruit weighing over500 grams.

The Mahaweli farmers have already obtained plants form overseas and have planted them in Mahaweli areas. After 5 years of planting it can get economical yield and the Mahaweli Authority is now making arrangements to export this in amore organized manner. “We are also planning to grow 20 acres of Tom EJC in the Moragahakanda area from next month,” an official said.
