Sub Committee to investigate rise of child abuse

A special sub committee has been appointed by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) to inquire into the rise in child abuse cases. The appointment of the sub committee comes at a time when the number of child abuse cases reported in the country has seen an increase.

The sub committee is due to find out the causes of child abuse and propose steps to be taken to prevent such incidents. NCPA Chairperson Anoma Dissanayake has said that the sub committee will be open for ideas and opinions from the public on issues related to child abuse.

When the NCPA in July opened a hotline for public to lodge complaints on child abuse it received 200 complaints within the first 24 hours of introducing the service. It has been reported that cases of rape involving children at the hands of close relatives have increased among other abuses.
