Magistrate refuses bail for 21 undergrads [November 1 2010]

The Colombo Magistrate today rejected bail application for the 21 university students who were arrested on October 14 at the Higher Education Ministry premises. The undergraduates were arrested when they forcibly entered into the Ministry premises and allegedly caused damages to public property.

The Colombo Magistrates Court had rejected bail for the 21 university students on the grounds that stating that it did not possess the power to grant bail and further remanded the students till November 12. The lawyers representing the students have now submitted a petition to the Colombo High Court seeking bail. The petition is to be taken up by the High Court on Wednesday (03).
