SL Navy denies attacking Indian fishermen [November 3 2010]

Sri Lanka Navy totally denied the allegation that 15 Indian fishermen were attacked by the SLN personel near the International Maritime Border Line, early this morning.

SLN spokesman Athula Senarath said there was no SLN activity taken place in the said location and denied the SLN’s involvement in the alleged incident.

However, the Indian media had reported an incident where the 15 fishermen were attacked and injured and accused the SLN for the incident.

Senarath said the SLN always help the fishermen who were in distress irrespective of their nationality.

The SLN had rescued three Indian fishing trawlers, which had engine problems near the seas of North West Delft Islands, yesterday.

“ The three trawlers were towed to the anchorage at the Delft by the ‘Ranawickrama’ attached to the Northern naval Command. There were 11 Indian fishermen and the trawlers were repaired and the fishermen are getting ready to go back”, he said.
