Credit cards for pubic sector employees [November 7 2010]

Ministry of Internal Trade and Cooperatives will launch a new credit card for public sector employees. Deputy Internal Trade and Cooperatives Minister Neomal Perera said the decision was taken as a measure to further ease the cost of living burden from the public sector employees. He said that salaries of state sector employees cover 25 percent of the population.

"The government therefore would address this issue and has planned to provide state sector employees with a credit card to purchase goods and services at discounted prices from state enterprises," he said. The credit card is to be launched next months and once launched would provide a seven percent discount to public servants on purchases of government products.

Perera said that while maintaining prices in the local market, the government would always address the needs of the local consumers.
