Bandula Warnapura at Asian Games! [November 11 2010]

Sri Lanka’s first Test captain Bandula Warnapura will have the rare honour of officiating as a Match Referee at the 16th Asian Games cricket tournament.

Warnapura, who had the privilege of leading Sri Lanka team in its inaugural Test against England at Saravanamuttu Stadium way back in 1982, arrived in Guangzhou, China today to function as an official of the Asian Games cricket tournament. The 57-year-old former Sri Lanka opener has represented his country in four Tests and 12 one day internationals.

Cricket is one of the latest disciplines to be added to the Asian Games proper and it will be interesting to see how the Asian cricketing giant, especially those in the sub continent, make their presence felt during the men’s tournament to be worked off from November 21. In addition, women’s cricket tournament will be worked off from tomorrow with the gold medal deciding final scheduled for November 20.
