Civil defence force to chase elephants [December 22 2010]

The Ministry of Agrarian Services and Wildlife is to train civil defence force personnel to solve the Human Elephant Conflict.

Minister S.M. Chandrasena said there were over 3,000 3000 civil defence force personnel and they would be given a training under the Department of Wildlife on handing the issue.

“ They will be deployed in the areas where the human elephant conflict is a major issue. They will be use to guard the cultivations, prevent poaching, illegal timber felling and also to safeguard the villagers”, he said.

He said they would not be armed with firearms but would be given devices to chase the animals.
