Census on wild jumbos [December 10 2010]

An islandwide census on wild elephants will be carried out by the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC), which estimates a wild elephant population between 5,000 to 6,000 in Sri Lanka.  

The Director General DWLC Dr Chandrawansa Pathiraja said this would be the first census to count wild elephants in the entire country and will be carried out in August this year
