Eight LTTE ships still remain intact  [January 06 2011]

The Chief Government Whip Minister Dinesh Gunawardene informed the parliament today that eight ships which belongs to the LTTE still remains with members and operate from overseas.

These vessels registered under the names of different international organization are used for various illegal activities such as human smuggling. Eashswari ship which recently entered Canada illegally can be cited as an example, the minister said.

The minister was responded to an oral question raised by the UNP MP Gamini Jayawickrema Perera.

He said necessary steps are being taken by the intelligence authorities in connection with these remaining ships but the information cannot be divulged due to security reasons.

If the ships that were in possession of the LTTE were completely destroyed due to joint operations between Navy and Air Force during the past 8 years minister Gunawardene said adding that even though LTTE was militarily defeated in Sri Lanka, their international network still operates.
