US helps flood victims [January 15 2011]

The US has announced a donation of US $ 300,000 to assist over one million people affected due recent floods and landslides.

Us Ambassador Patricia A. Butenis said US has already provided a varieties of goods and services assistance to the people who were badly affected by the disaster.

She said the US government has provided boats to local governments in Batticaloa to evacuate people in the flood hit areas.

“ We were helping the government to identify the families in need and to make an accurate assessment of the situation”, she said.

Ambassador Butenis said the Us was distributing emergency relief supplies including bottled water, cooking material, tarpaulins and other necessary items to thousands of families in Batticoloa, Trincomalee and Ampara districts.

She said the US government would continue to monitor the situation closely.
