Braggs visit only a humanitarian mission - UN [January 19 2011]

The UN said the two-day visit by the UN Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, Catharine Bragg to Sri Lanka was purely a humanitarian visit to assess the flood situation that affected over one million people and not a work related to the UN expert panel.

She is to arrive in Sri Lanka today.

The Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Martin Nesirky told media that her visit was a humanitarian visit. “Well, what I can tell you is that Ms. Bragg’s visit it obviously a humanitarian visit. It is not related to work of the Panel. It is not. And I think that’s quite clear,” he said.

The United Nations is to launch a Flash Appeal for emergency funds to assist people affected by floods in Sri Lanka on January 20.

Bragg is to visit flood hit areas in the East and to meet top government officials, donors and aid agencies.
