Plea to save Asia’s oldest and largest Red Sandalwood tree [January 19 2011]

The Centre for environmental Justice (CEJ) requests the Ministry of Environment to save the Asia’s oldest and largest Red Sandalwood tree, which is to be auctioned for the road development in Badulla Town.

The CEJ said that a massive tree cutting program is going on for the road development in Badulla Town and surrounding areas and a large number of valuable trees are being felled down daily by the constructers creating an environmental issue in the area.

“ We want to draw the attention of the government to save this Red Sandalwood tree which has a high historic and intrinsic value,” CFJ sources said.
