GSMP to file report on Trinco earth cracks [January 23 2011]

A special scientific investigation has been launched to ascertain the actual cause for the cracks in the earth that are said to have appeared in certain parts in Trincomalee today. An official of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) said there will be a full research and investigation to find out how the cracks have erupted

He said that experts from GSMB and the Central Environmental Authority will make a careful study on the matter and the report would be issued shortly. It was this morning that the residents of Kalapai Aru in Kochuveli discovered the cracks which had caused the public to panic fearing a possible earthquake, according to the Kochuveli Police. Several Police officers including the Kochuveli Police OIC were at the location and geologists from the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau too have already visited the area.

They said that there are no signs of an immediate danger and said that it could be due to word of the crack appearing in the earth making the rounds. The Police said people in the surrounding area have been  flocking to witness the cracks hampering the initial investigations.
