The Department of Registration of Persons, which operates within the purview of the Ministry of Defence has taken steps to issue new digitalized National Identity Cards for Sri Lankan citizens., Secretary of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa disclosed at the opening of a new high-tech information centre for the Department of Registration of Persons.
Speaking at the event the secretary said that the NIC is the valid proof for one's identity therefore it must not be able to alter or forge. With the opening of new high-tech facility at the Department, its services have been extended to public via internet and SMS. Public can check their ID status by sending the text message "RPD STS {Application Number}" to 1919. They could also log in to the Lanka Gate Country Portal at www.srilanka.lk.
