UN hails govt. for restoring livelihood activities in North [February 02 2011]

The UN commended the government for restoring livelihood activities among the displaced people who returned to their villages in 2010.

In its recent report ‘Joint Plan for Assistance Northern Province 2011’, stated that there was a substantial increase in livelihood activities with the support of the government and several agencies engaged in restoring livelihood infrastructure, which was in critical stage.

A livelihood package value Rs. 35,000 for agriculture, livestock and fisheries and other income generating activities helped people to get back to their livelihood activities.

Over 80 percent of people in the North depend on farming and the government offered extensive support to revive agricultural sector. Out of 240,000 acres of cultivable paddy lands in the North over 200,000 acres had been cultivated due to the support of the government and other agencies involved in restoring livelihood support, the report said.
