Customs seize ethanol and acetone [February 02 2011]

The Sri Lanka Custom Department has seized five containers with 120 barrels of acetone and 280 barrels of ethanol smuggled from Malaysia, today. The stocks were imported illegally by evading tax payments worth of Rs. 19.9 million.

A person, attached to a company in Wellampitiya has taken into custody. The importers had declared the stock as acetone to the value of Rs.8.3 million. Acetone is a chemical used as a solvent to manufacture paint and thinner

The additional stock of ethanol and acetone were hidden among the stocks.

The raid was conducted following the directions of Director General Customs Sudharma Karunaratne and Director of Customs K. Ranjan.
