Govt. to preserve historical sites in N/E [February 10 2011]

The historical sites in the North and East, which have been isolated and damaged due to the past few decades, will be preserved under a special project initiated by the Ministry of National Heritage.

Excavations are carried out in several locations in the areas by the archeological department, which is under the National and Heritage Ministry.

Accordingly, Gokanna and Mathota; the ancient ports which used to be the commercial center in ancient Sri Lanka for China and Rome will be preserved.

Also, Kadurugoda temple and the precinct , the temple ground and ruins of the Anuradhapura era, areas of Thiriyaya and Kachchaveli, Koneshvaran Kovil in Delft Island will be preserved.
